Third time was the charm for the Ferndale Wildcats, who got the better of Little 4 rivals South Fork 68-54 at Miranda in the opening round of the Dick NIclai tournament in boys basketball on Monday night.
The win sets up a semifinal showdown at Del Norte on Wednesday night.
The Wildcats, who dropped both regular season matchups to South Fork, took control of a tight game with a big second quarter outscoring the Cubs 26-12 for the period.
Tristen Martin scored a team-high 15 points to lead a balanced team effort for Ferndale, while Emmitt Albee added 14 points and Ryder Millsap 13.
Javier Lopez and Jenner Christiansen each also scored 12 in the win, as Ferndale improved to 15-10.
For South Fork, Alex Harding continued his outstanding season, scoring a game-high 21 points, while Riley Gallagher added 15 points and Cameron Messenger seven.
The Cubs dropped to 13-11.
Wednesday’s game at Del Norte will tip off at 7 p.m., with the winner advancing to Friday night’s Niclai championship game at Lumberjack Arena.
