The Dick Niclai tournaments get under way this coming week, featuring the best local prep teams on the North Coast.
In the girls tournament, the Fortuna Huskies are the No. 1 seed from the Big 5 and will be favored to win the Niclai to add to their conference championship, although Big 5 rivals Eureka, Arcata and McKinleyville will all be eager to upset the odds.
The Tigers and Panthers meet in a play-in game on Monday, with the winner advancing to play at Eureka the following night.
And the way the Big 5 has unfolded this season, any team appears capable of beating anyone else on any given night.
The St. Bernard’s girls are the No. 1 seed from the Little 4 and won’t back down from the challenge after knocking off a pair of Big 5 teams in recent weeks.
Or can Ferndale or Hoopa upset the odds and knock off one of their bigger rivals?
