The Humboldt State men were outscored by just one point in each half on the way to losing another close one at Lumberjack Arena on Thursday night, falling 76-74 to visiting Cal State San Marcos in men’s basketball
The HSU women also dropped a close one, falling in overtime to the same school by a score of 59-56.
The loss was the fourth straight for the HSU men, who dropped to 6-8 overall and 2-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Isaiah Pope paced the Jacks with 15 points in a back-and-forth game that featured seven lead changes.
Jackson Strong added 12 points and Zachary Christian 11 points, while Gabrys Sadaunykas finished with nine points and eight rebounds.
The Jacks will try to end their losing skid when they host the No. 6 team in the nation, UC San Diego, on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
HSU Women 56, CS San Marcos 59, OT
The Lumberjacks were outscored 19-11 in the fourth quarter to force overtime at Lumberjack Arena on Thursday night, and the Cougars carried the momentum into the extra period to sneak the win.
The loss was the third in four games for the HSU women, who are now 5-4 in conference and 9-5 overall, although this one came against the No. 23 team in the nation.
Alexia Thrower had another outstanding night in the loss, with game highs in points (23), rebounds (16) and steals (4).
Tyra Turner added 12 points for the HSU women, who will try to rebound against UC San Diego on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Lumberjack Arena.
