By Ray Hamill — This weekend will be a busy one for local cross country, with three big events featuring North Coast runners.
On Saturday the H-DNL teams will head to Hayward for the North Coast Section championships, with all eyes on the Arcata girls and freshman Ai-Lan McGoldrick in particular.
McGoldrick has been sensational during the regular season, winning all seven league races on her way to a dominating league title.
McGoldrick leads a Tigers team that will be expected to make some noise in the Division-IV race in Hayward, with a trip to the state meet on the line.
Eureka, Del Norte, Fortuna and McKinleyville will all compete in Division IV, one of five divisions in the NCS.
H-DNL champion West Wood will lead the local boys challenge, along with Fortuna’s Collin Stockwell and Eureka’s Ian Bennett, all three of whom have won a league event this fall.
College of the Redwoods runner Kaleb Traficante will also be in action this weekend, traveling to Fresno for the community college state championships.
Traficante is coming off a breakout season, including his first-ever win in the sport, at the recent Golden Valley Conference championships.
Also in action this weekend, Humboldt State’s Daniel Tull will compete at the NCAA Division-II nationals in Sacramento.
The Lumberjacks senior earned his spot at the prestigious event with a seventh-place finish at the West Region championships in Oregon earlier this month.
Tull is enjoying a standout season and was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week twice this fall.
