Ray Hamill/HumboldtSports.com – Daeden Taylor and the Fortuna Huskies need one more win to be playoff eligible.
By Ray Hamill — Prep2Prep.com released their updated playoff projections for the North Coast Section on Wednesday and there’s one notable absence from the list.
After last week’s loss to Fortuna, the Eureka Loggers are now facing an uphill battle to make the playoffs and will need to beat Del Norte in Crescent City on the final day of the regular season to be even eligible,
The good news for the Loggers is that they still hold their fate in their own hands, and wins in their final two games, including a showdown at St. Bernard’s on Saturday, would likely see them through.
It hasn’t helped matters playing without starting quarterback Trevor Bell the past two games and Eureka fans will be hoping to see the senior back for this Saturday’s game at Crusader Field, although that seems unlikely.
Bell is listed as day-to-day.
For the rest of the H-DNL, however, the Prep2Prep projections make for good reading, with six of eight teams projected to qualify.
The Fortuna Huskies’ win over Eureka has put them right back in the mix in Division 5, where Prep2Prep lists them as the No. 7 seed.
The Huskies need just one win in their final two games — against Del Norte and St. Bernard’s — to be playoff eligible.
Interestingly, Prep2Prep has the Huskies (3-5) matching up against No. 2 Del Norte (7-1) in the opening round of the NCS, which would be the third meeting between the two programs this season.
They play each other on Friday night in Fortuna.
In Division 6, Prep2Prep has St. Bernard’s (6-2) as the top seed, with the Arcata Tigers (4-4) at No. 8.
If the seeds hold, the two H-DNL rivals will meet again in the opening round of the playoffs.
The Crusaders close out the regular season with tough matchups against two Division-5 opponents, Eureka and Fortuna, and a pair of wins or even one win would likely solidify that top seed.
For Arcata, which has an impressive win over a highly-ranked Willits team (No. 3 in Division 7) earlier in the season, victories in its final two games will likely seal the deal.
The Tigers play McKinleyville this week and then travel to Hoopa for the season finale in what could be a playoff game for a playoff spot.
In Division 7, the Ferndale Wildcats (6-2) are sitting pretty after what has been a very impressive campaign so far.
Prep2Prep has the Cats as the No. 2 seed behind Salesian, and wins over Hoopa and McKinleyville in their final two games would likely solidify that.
Hoopa, meanwhile, is projected as the No. 8 seed.
The Warriors (3-4), who became playoff eligible with their win over McKinleyville last weekend, could strengthen their bid with one win in their final two games against Ferndale and Arcata, but could very well be included even with two late losses.
