By Ray Hamill — Eureka’s Klayre Barres turned in another strong performance in a pivotal league showdown at Arcata on Saturday, scoring one her team’s goals in a 2-2 tie with the league leading Huskies.
Along with fellow juniors Keylei Carroll, Aquene Tollefson and Rebecca Russ, Barres appeared fired up from the opening kickoff with a determined performance.
They caught the home team off guard early on when the tenacious Carroll fought off a Fortuna defender to launch a brilliant shot from outside the penalty area on a breakaway that gave the Fortuna goalie no chance.
Russ, along with senior defender Angelina Wescott, anchored the back line with another composed performance, while Tollfeson, one of the toughest players on the North Coast, battled for every ball.
Barres almost stole the show late in the game, breaking onto a through ball out wide and taking it to goal before finishing with a nice shot across the goalmouth that bounced in off the far post.
The goal gave the Loggers the lead with 12 minutes remaining, but the home team would respond when Kallia Yang scored the tying goal just two and a half minutes later off another well-placed Sarah Killfoil free kick into the penalty area.
Killfoil scored the Huskies’ opener late in the first half off an earlier free kick.
