By Ray Hamill — It’s going to be a big week for local JV football.
On Thursday night, two of the top H-DNL squads this season will face off in Crescent City, when the undefeated Del Norte Warriors host the McKinleyville Panthers.
Following that on Friday, the Arcata Tigers will debut their JVs as a part of the homecoming festivities, when they play Hoopa in eight-person football before the varsity game.
Game time is set for 5 p.m. at the Redwood Bowl.
Thursday’s clash between the 5-1 Panthers and the 5-0 Warriors could be one of the best JV games of the season here on the North Coast and is set for 6 p.m.
This past weekend the Warriors continued to roll with a 36-8 win over Trinity, and have impressed this year every bit as much as the school’s dominating varsity squad.
The Panthers, who lost their first game against Eureka last week, have been one of the stories of the season in the H-DNL, offering a struggling varsity program plenty of hope for the future.
It’s not just the fact that they’re winning most of their games, but it’s how they’ve been winning them, with some clutch comebacks earlier in the season leading the way to some blowouts more recently.
In their two games before losing to Eureka — against Lower Lake and Hoopa — the Panthers outscored their opponents by a combined 92-7.
In other JV action this week, Eureka plays at Chico.
The Loggers have won three straight to go to 4-3 on the year, while Chico comes into the game with a record of 2-4.
Eureka scored a TD with 30 seconds remaining to beat McKinleyville 20-14.
The Fortuna JVs (1-2) will also be in action, hosting Foothill (4-1) at 4 p.m. on Friday.
