Ray Hamill/HumboldtSports.com – The Ferndale Wildcats defeated rivals Fortuna in the annual Milk Can showdown on Friday night.
By Ray Hamill — Landon Gomes led an impressive showing by the Ferndale Wildcats in Friday night’s Milk Can showdown at Fortuna, as the visitors came away with a statement 13-7 win over their closest rivals.
But the senior leader made sure no one was getting carried away with anything after just their third game of the season, and let it be known there’s still more work to do.
“I’m so proud of Landon Gomes for multiple things,” Ferndale head coach Clint McClurg said. “When we got back across the bridge and were in the locker-room, he came up to me and he said, ‘coach, we’re not done yet,’ and I just love that. That’s the kind of mentality we need.”
Friday’s win was an impressive one for the Cats, but in the head coach’s words, they don’t want to look back on the season and hang their hats on this one.
They want more.
Gomes was instrumental in the win, rushing for 111 yards, including breaking free for a 64-yard TD in the second quarter, and leading a running game by committee, which enjoyed a lot of success behind a dominating performance by the line.
