Busy week for local baseball as Team Australia comes to town

By Ray Hamill — Get ready for a summer feast of baseball this week, with Team Australia coming to town and a total of 35 American Legion games scheduled over the next five days.

The touring club, led by former Crabs standout Steve Fish, will return to the North Coast with four teams and will play numerous games in Arcata, Eureka and Fortuna against both Humboldt Eagles 19U and 17U, as well as the Northern Humboldt Giants and Southern Humboldt 76ers, and teams from Red Bluff and Mt. Shasta.

The games will be split between Newburg Park in Fortuna, Bomber Field and Crusader Field in Eureka, Redwood Fields in Cutten, and both the Arcata Babe Ruth Park and the Arcata Ball Park.

The action gets under way on Wednesday, when the high-flying Eagles 19U play a doubleheader against the Australia Red and White squads, with game one set for 4:30 p.m.

Also on Wednesday, the Australia Grey team will play both the 76ers and Giants in Fortuna at 1 and 3:30 p.m., respectively, before the two local rivals close out a triple-header of action at Newburg Park at 6 p.m.

Thursday will feature a triple-header of action at the Arcata Ball Park, with the Eagles 17U and 19U in action against two of the Australia teams and the action getting under way at 2 p.m.

The action continues through the weekend, with teams Mt. Shasta and Red Bluff joining the mix on Friday, including a pair of league games between the Eagles 19U and Mt. Shasta on both Friday and Saturday.

Also this weekend, the 76ers are scheduled to host a five-team round robin tournament, with the Giants returning to Fortuna along with teams from Red Bluff, Gridley and Brookings and the action getting under on Friday.
