Ray Hamill/HumboldtSports.com – Arcata’s Hunter Lewis delivers a serve during last week’s showdown with Northcoast Prep.

By Ray Hamill — As always there were plenty of great individual performances among the local high school ranks over the past week, but it was a pair of college athletes and a local pro that dominate this week’s Humboldt Sports Athletes of the Week.

At Fresno State, former Fortuna High star Hailey Dolcini was in top form again last week with a shutout win against Cal State Northridge, and continues to lead the way for her team this year.

And that earns her one of our Athlete of the Week honors.

Closer to home, College of the Redwoods sophomore James Garcia is enjoying an outstanding season in what has largely been a disappointing campaign so far for the Corsairs, and was a bright spot once again this past weekend.

So too was former Hoopa Valley wrestler Orion Cosce, who is taking the local MMA scene by storm and won his second professional fight on Saturday night.

And that was good enough to earn them our co-male Athlete of the Week honors.

And finally, in boys tennis the Arcata Tigers have been unstoppable this season, and appear to be cruising toward yet another Humboldt-Del Norte League title, which earns them our Team of the Week nod.

Orion Cosce

Lost Boys Gym

Cosce, a former Hoopa Valley wrestler, was in dominating form over the weekend when he won his second pro fight on his way to claiming the Warrior Games Welterweight belt in Wisconsin.

Cosce is one of the top local MMA talents and has been impressive as a pro, comfortably winning both of his fights so far.

The local fighter will be back in action at the next Bear River Casino fight night in early May.

James Garcia

Redwoods Baseball, Sophomore

Garcia is enjoying a stellar season in just about all aspects of the game, and was in top form once again over the weekend in a three-game series against Lassen.

The Corsairs dropped all three games but it wasn’t due to a lack of effort from Garcia, who pitched 6.2 strong innings in the series opener, while providing some key hits on offense.

For the season, Garcia leads CR both offensively and on the mound.

He is hitting a team-best .355, including seven doubles, and also leads the way on the mound with an ERA of .386, while recording two of CR’s three wins.

Hailey Dolcini

Fresno State Softball, Sophomore

Dolcini made the switch to Fresno State this season and has wasted little time settling in with her new team.

She appeared in three games last week, including two complete games, giving up three runs in 15 innings, including a 2-0 shutout victory against Cal State Northridge.

The four-time Big 5 MVP is 7-4 for the Bulldogs this season and leads her team in just about every major statistic, including ERA (2.48) and complete games (seven).

TEAM OF THE WEEK

There seems to be no stopping the Tigers this season once again, as they roll toward another league crown in the sport.

After overcoming their closest challengers, Northcoast Prep, twice on Tuesday of last week, the Tigers took a major step toward this season’s league title.

The Arcata boys are now 9-0.
