Fortuna senior wrestler Adam Medeiros continued to lead the way for the Huskies this past weekend, helping them to a fifth-place finish as a team at the North Coast Classic, hosted by Eureka.

Medeiros, who was named Most Valuable Upper Weight Wrestler, was the only local champion, earning him the nod for one of this week’s Humboldt Sports Athletes of the Week.

The Eureka girls, meanwhile, placed first as a team at the first-ever all-girls North Coast Classic, earning the Loggers the honor of Team of the Week.

In girls basketball action, McKinleyville senior Theresia Dickey continued to dominate opponents on the defensive side of the ball, also earning her Athlete of the Week honors.

Fortuna Wrestling, Senior

Medeiros has been the leading local wrestler all season, quickly making the transition to the mats after a very successful campaign in football.

The senior standout took another first place at the North Coast Classic at 170 pounds this past weekend, having recently also been the only local wrestler to place first at the big Anderson tournament.

McKinleyville Basketball, Senior

Arguably the most tenacious player in the county, Dickey is coming off an impressive week, with big defensive performances against Del Norte, Fortuna and Arcata in an eight-day spell.

The senior has evolved into one of the top shut-down defenders in the H-DNL and has been consistently inspirational for the Panthers all season, always showing up with intensity.

Eureka Girls Wrestling

It’s been an historic season for local girls wrestling, and an historic one for the Loggers in particular.

This past weekend, Eureka hosted a first all-girls North Coast Classic to go with the annual boys and JV tournaments, and the host school became the inaugural champions.

It’s the latest achievement in what has been a successful season for the program, which will compete at the upcoming first-ever all-girls H-DNL championships and NCS championships.
