Big day for local wrestlers at North Coast Classic

By Ray Hamill – Fortuna senior Adam Medeiros led the local charge at Saturday’s North Coast Classic at Eureka High, which featured wrestlers from eight local high schools among the field of 20 schools.

The 22nd holding of the largest annual local wrestling tournament saw several Humboldt-Del Norte grapplers place.

Medeiros took first place at 170 pounds, the only local champion on the boys side, leading the Huskies to a fifth place in the team competition.

The Huskies’ showing was the best of the local programs, with perennial powerhouse Elk Grove taking top spot, followed by Foothill, Grants Pass and Willits.

Fortuna had six wrestlers place.

In addition to Medeiros, Joey Pontes and Del McKenzie each placed second at 160 and 220 pounds, respectively.

Levi Nyberg (145) and Asa McKenzie (132) each placed fourth, while Andrew Hansen (138) was fifth.

St. Bernard’s Lucindo Gable also continued to impress with another strong showing at 220 pounds, this time placing third.

Arcata was second best among the local teams, finishing 10th, two spots ahead of Del Norte, which was followed in turn by Eureka, McKinleyville, St. Bernard’s and Hoopa.

The Tigers had three wrestlers place, including Marley Harris, who placed third at 106 pounds, as well and Omar Green (fourth at 113) and Logan Kopenhaver (fifth at 126).

Del Norte also had three wrestlers place, led by Cruz Cerros, who placed fourth at 120.

Del Norte’s Jordan Woodley was fifth at 170 and Blake Allen was sixth at 126.

Inder Singh, who placed fifth at 132, paced Eureka and was one of four Loggers to place, along with Ruben Gutierrez (sixth at 145), Casey Sidoti (sixth at 152) and Isaac Cook (seventh at 113).

McKinleyville’s Skyler Hicks also continued to impress and placed fifth at 195 pounds, while teammate Michael Nelson was sixth at 182.
