Athletes and team of the week

Two deserving local athletes get the nod this week as much for what they’ve been doing all season long as for what they managed last week.

They also happen to be two of the best all-around local athletes, and standouts in multiple sports.

Fortuna senior Camrin Dolcini and St. Bernard’s junior Lane Thrap have each been instrumental in their respective teams’ success this winter, with each stepping up once again over the past week.

Team of the Week honors, meanwhile, go to the South Fork boys basketball team for its big achievement at St. Bernard’s on Thursday.

Camrin Dolcini

Fortuna Basketball, Senior

Dolcini is one of the best all-around athletes in the Humboldt-Del Norte League, starring in cross country, basketball and track and field.

On Friday, she led the way as the Huskies got a much-needed win at Arcata, turning in a dynamic performance that helped the Fortuna girls hold off a furious Arcata rally.

Lane Thrap

St. Bernard’s Basketball, Junior

Thrap has been leading the way for the Crusaders all season, scoring 63 points in three games last week, including a game-high 30 points against South Fork.

As South Fork head coach Taylor Morrow said, the key to beating St. Bernard’s is stopping Thrap, although that’s proven to be a lot easier said than done.

South Fork Boys Basketball

The Cubs ended the Crusaders’ six-year unbeaten run in the Little 4 with an inspirational 68-56 win at St. Bernard’s on Thursday.

The South Fork boys are a team in the true sense of the word, with a deeper lineup than any of their Little 4 opponents, and they needed just about every one of them to post the historic win.
