By Ray Hamill — CR”s Elise Wilson capped an impressive season on the volleyball court with an all-conference first-team selection this week.

Wilson, out of Golden Sierra High School in the Sacramento area, has been one of the Corsairs’ top players since joining the team, earning an all-Golden Valley Conference honorable mention as a freshman, and topping that with a first-team selection this season.

But that comes as no surprise to head coach Petra Lorenzi, who considers the CR sophomore the best all-around libero in the conference.

“She’s a go-getter,” Lorenzi said of Wilson. “She works hard, and she wants to improve on a regular basis.”

As a sophomore, Wilson also developed into more of a on-court leader.

“She has a very strong personality presence on the court,” the head coach said. “She takes control of our serve receive, and in volleyball if you have a good serve receive, you can do other things well.”

This weekend Wilson is appearing at a sophomore showcase event at Solano Community College in Fairfield, as part of the state championship festivities.

The event features sophomores who were named first-team all-conference, giving them the opportunity to showcase their talents for four-year schools.

“We’re working on hopefully getting her out there,” said Lorenzi, who traveled with Wilson for the event.

One of Wilson’s new teammates this season, Ariana Gallegos, was also honored as an all-GVC honorable mention.

Gallegos, from New Mexico, enjoyed a breakout campaign with the Corsairs as a freshman setter.

“She’s just become our offensive leader,” Lorenzi said of Gallegos. “She coordinates people and just makes sure they’re in the right places, and she’s consistently leading our offensive players.

“And she’s also become a strong offensive threat herself.”
