By Ray Hamill — St. Bernard’s junior Will Omey has been named one of this week’s MaxPreps/USA Football Players of the Week.
The winners, announced on Wednesday, are selected by USA Football and chosen based on stats submitted to MaxPreps.
On Tuesday, Omey was nominated as one of five candidates for the West region, one of eight regions in the nation.
Omey earned the honor after a standout performance in Saturday’s North Coast Section playoff loss at San Marin, during which he accounted for seven touchdowns, running in for five of them, while passing for two more.
He completed 19-of-30 passes for 277 yards in the loss, while carrying the ball 43 times for 260 yards.
Omey has turned in several top performances this season, and led all seven divisions in the NCS in total offensive yards
Omey finished the year with 2,271 yards and 31 touchdowns passing, while rushing for 1,413 yards and 19 TDs.
The St. Bernard’s junior beat out Cardinal Newman quarterback Jackson Pavitt, who was also nominated having also accounted for seven TDs in his team’s weekend playoff win.
The eight weekly award winners each receive a certificate and a letterman patch.

Could not have do it without his team members on the field. What is their reward?
To support their teammate… it was an outsider group that nominated the one player not the whole team… and the one player totally understands what you just wrote but it’s not the players fault now is it…
I stand by what I said. Take away the other players on the field and he would be nothing! Hope you can grasp that information.
