By Ray Hamill — It may have been a disappointing weekend for St. Bernard’s sports, with both the football and girls soccer teams losing their North Coast Section playoff games in disappointing fashion, but it wasn’t all bad news for the Crusaders.

Both teams turned in memorable performances despite the losses, with several standout individual displays.

Two of their athletes in particular — seniors Jasa Sisemore and Connor Chase — have enjoyed stellar seasons and did enough this weekend to earn themselves Humboldt Sports Athlete of the week honors.

Team of the week honors, meanwhile, goes to the Fortuna football team, after an impressive road playoff win.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Jasa Sisemore

St. Bernard’s Soccer, Senior

Sisemore closed out an outstanding season with another dominating display for the Crusaders in their 1-0 loss to Technology in the NCS Division-III championship game at Rancho Cotate HS on Saturday.

As she has been all season, Sisemore was instrumental at both ends of the field, anchoring the defense with veteran composure, while creating numerous dangerous attacks when roving forward.

Fortuna Football

The Huskies turned in one of the most impressive performances of the weekend in the NCS playoffs, comfortably beating Kennedy on the road in Richmond by a score of 42-18.

No. 6 Fortuna is the second lowest seed still alive in any of the five NCS brackets heading into the semifinal stage (only No. 8 Vintage in Division I is seeded lower), and is riding an eight-game playoff win streak.

The Huskies look primed to repeat as NCS champions right now, and will be a handful for Del Norte this weekend.

  1. Jasa led the team and was one of the fastest players in the HDN League. As sweeper, she netted 22 goals and tallied 6 assists. She will be missed as a leader and for inspiring others with her attitude, intensity and class.
