McKinleyville, Del Norte teams prevail in youth football playoffs

Photos by Ray Hamill/HumboldtSports.com – The McKinleyville AAA team defeated Redwood 48-6 on Sunday.

Del Norte and McKinleyville each had a pair of winning teams in the opening round of the Six Rivers Youth Football playoffs on Sunday.

In total there were six games split between McKinleyville and Ferndale high schools, with two games in each of the three age groups, featuring the Nos. 3 through 6 seeds in each bracket.

And it was a good day for both McKinleyville and Del Norte.

McKinleyville had the No. 3 seed in both AAA and AA, and both teams posted comfortable wins over Redwood, with the elder statesmen winning 48-6 and the AA team winning 36-6.

In the second AAA game, Hoopa defeated Eel River Valley 20-7 to set up a semifinal matchup against No. 1 seed Ferndale this coming Sunday at South Bay Elementary.

McKinleyville will now advance to play No. 2 seed Del Norte in the second semifinal, at Del Norte.

In the other first-round game in AA, Del Norte Blue defeated Ferndale 32-14 and will move on to play No. 1 seed Eureka Junior League at South Bay Elementary.

McKinleyville will now play No. 2 seed Del Norte Blue in Crescent City.

In single-A action, meanwhile, Redwood defeated Ferndale 12-0 in the opening round, while Del Norte Gold defeated McKinleyville 46-0.

Redwood advances to play No. 1 seed Eureka Junior League at South Bay Elementary, while Del Norte Gold moves on to play No. 2 Eel River Valley at Del Norte.

All semifinal games will be played this Sunday, with the single-A teams kicking off at 9:30 a.m., followed by AA at noon and AAA at 2:30 p.m.
