Senior Molly Citro shot a round of 80 at the Peacock Gap Golf Course in San Rafael on Monday to lead the Panthers to a second straight North Coast Section Division-II title in girls golf.
Citro, who edged out teammate Phoebe Sundberg for the Humboldt-Del Norte League title a week ago, was in top form again on Monday, placing ninth overall individually.
“Molly had it going today,” McKinleyville coach Travis Evans said.
Junior Phoebe Sundberg was just one stroke behind her teammate in 10th with an 81, while sophomore Isabella Sundberg was 15th with an 84, just one stroke off her personal best round.
The three big scores were enough to qualify the trio for next week’s NCS Division-I championships at Tilden Park Golf Course in Berkeley.
Impressive team total
Senior Jayme Willis rounded out the big performance from the Mack girls with a 107, giving the Panthers a 352 total, an impressive 29 strokes better than second-placed St. Patrick/St. Vincent.
The team title was the second straight for the Mack girls, and the fourth ever for the H-DNL.
It also presents a slight problem of sorts for the first-year head coach, who now has to pay up.
“I made a bet with the girls at the beginning of the year that if they won sections, they’d get to chop off my hair,” said Evans, who has been growing his hair for the past couple of years.
It was Phoebe Sundberg who suggested it, and Evans added with a laugh that he “should have given it more thought.”
The Mack girls did offer their coach an out, if he got a meerkat tattoo instead, but he declined.
Arcata’s Henry moving on
Arcata’s Avary Henry will also move on to next week’s Division-I championships after shooting an 82 on Monday and placing 13th overall.
Henry’s teammate Kate Plumley shot a 10, while Raime Young paced Eureka with a 112, and St. Bernard’s Shelby Meyer shot a 119 as the Crusaders’ lone representative.
Arcata’s Brooke Bisgrove (107), Maddie Lankari (108) and Mari Pepper (113) rounded out the Tigers’ scores, while Hannah Arnold (118) and Marissa Highly (119) rounded out Eureka’s scores.
Arcata is the only other H-DNL school to have won an NCS crown in girls golf, having done so in both 2010 and 1998.
