Will Omey threw for seven touchdowns and ran in for another on Friday night, as St. Bernard’s beat Fortuna 56-54 in overtime in a thrilling game of football at Husky Field.

Both offenses were unstoppable, marching up and down the field with ease, and scoring on eight straight possessions to start the second half.

“That was one of the most exciting games I’ve ever been a part of,” St. Bernard’s head coach Matt Tomlin said. “Both teams left everything out on the field.”

Omey in particular.

“He was just so accurate tonight, putting the ball right where he wanted it,” Tomlin said of the junior quarterback. “He was just brilliant tonight.”

And he wasn’t alone.

Justin Hagler had a big night with three touchdown receptions and a pair of two-point conversions, including what would turn out to be the game winner.

There was little to separate either team in four quarters of play, with the score tied at 21-21 at halftime and 48-48 at the end of regulation.

In overtime, St. Bernard’s scored first on a Lane Thrap TD catch, before Hagler converted a crucial two-point run despite originally being stuffed short of the end zone.

“He kept driving his feet,” Tomlin said of the run. “He just didn’t quit. He kept driving and driving.”

The Huskies answered with a TD on the ensuing drive but were unable to convert on the two-point attempt when the Crusaders blitzed.

Thrap finished with two TD receptions, as well as a two-point catch, while Sebastian Taylor also had two touchdown receptions.

The win ends a three-game losing streak for St. Bernard’s, which improved to 1-1 in the Big 4 and 6-3 on the season.

For Fortuna, it was the second straight loss in league play, and the second thrilling shootout they came out on the wrong side of, after also falling 49-42 at Del Norte a week ago.

“I feel good that our kids kept fighting,” Fortuna head coach Mike Benbow said. “It was a great high school football game. It was just unfortunate we had to lose.

“I think both offenses were very good and both defenses were not very good.”

The Huskies drop to 0-2 in the Big 4 and 4-5 overall.
