Martel-Phillips, Vera lead the field again at McKinleyville

Adam Vera and Riley Martel-Phillips continued to impress in cross country this week, taking the top spots in the third round of Humboldt-Del Norte League action at McKinleyville High on Wednesday.

On the girls side, Arcata’s Martel-Phillips won for the third time in three league races, timing a season-best 18 minutes, 59 seconds.

The Tigers continued their dominance as a team, taking the top four spots, with Claire Monge in second (19:58).

Arcata won the team event with 17 points, well ahead of second-placed Eureka with 40.

Vivian Gerstein continued her impressive season with a third-place finish, just one second back of Monge, with Thea Norlund in fourth (20:32).

McKinleyville’s Cecelia Ferreira placed fifth in a time of 20:45, followed immediately by Eureka’s Hannah Kingstrom and KyleeAnna Zink Clinton.

Arcata’s Aleesa Lewis, McKinleyville’s Tamia Crackel and Del Norte’s Julia De solini rounded out the top 10.

Vera wins again

In the boys race, McKinleyville’s Vera won for the third time this season, pacing the field in a time of 16:21.

This week’s Humboldt Sports Athlete of the Week led a dominating Mack team performance, with the Panthers taking three of the top four spots.

Vera’s teammate West Wood was second, 14 seconds back, with Max Combs in fourth (17:48).

Arcata senior Miska Evans finished third in a time of 16:48.

The Mack boys won the team event with 33 points, ahead of Eureka (43) and Arcata (44).

Eureka’s Will Barbee and Arcata’s Miles Johnson placed fifth and sixth, followed by Eureka’s Jaeden Thayer, Arcata’s Ben Narwold and Tanis Otting, and Eureka’s Dimitri Stefanakis.
