Ray Hamill/HumboldtSports.com – HSU’s Demetrick Watts (5) was named GNAC Defensive Player of the Week.

Demetrick Watts’ big performance at the Redwood Bowl on Saturday night didn’t go unnoticed.

The Humboldt State linebacker was instrumental in helping the Jacks to their first win of the year, 23-16 over Simon Fraser, earning him Great Northwest Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors on Monday.

The Riverside, Calif., native finished with eight tackles, one tackle for loss, a sack and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

The sophomore standout recovered a fumble at the goal line for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown in the third quarter.

“Demetrick Watts played hard, like always,” HSU head coach Damaro Wheeler said. “He played fast and physical. He had an opportunity, with his effort, to score a touchdown.”

HSU plays at Permian Basin in Texas on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
