Former Humboldt State running back Ja’Quan Gardner was released by the San Francisco 49ers over the weekend, as the team made the cut down to its final 53-man roster.
Gardner, who signed a three-year deal with the team last week, was considered a long shot to make the final roster.
Local fans, however, were hoping the former Lumberjack would at least make the team’s 10-man practice squad, but his name was not included when the 49ers made that announcement on Sunday.
Gardner’s former HSU teammate, Alex Cappa, meanwhile, was named on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers final roster, as expected.
Cappa, whom the Bucs traded up to pick in the third round of this year’s NFL draft, is officially listed as the team’s back-up right guard.
The Bucs open the season at the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
