By Ray Hamill — College of the Redwoods football is trending in the right direction again.

After overcoming a 17-point deficit to win 30-27 on the road at American River in its conference opener on Saturday, CR moved up two spots in this week’s state coaches poll.

Redwoods, which improved to 5-1 with the weekend win, is now No. 15 in California.

After opening the season with four straight wins, CR reached a peak of No. 13 in the rankings three weeks ago, before dropping to No. 17 after suffering a first loss against Monterey Peninsula.

The weekend win leaves CR in an early three-way tie for top spot in the National NorCal Conference standings, along with Sierra (5-1 overall) and Butte (4-2).

Sierra is the hottest team in conference right now, having won five straight games, while Diablo Valley has lost two straight and dropped to 4-2 overall.

And with their five straight wins, the Wolverines are now the highest ranked team in the conference, moving up one spot to No. 8 this week after a 56-16 win over Laney over the weekend.

Butte, which beat Diablo Valley 24-14 on Saturday, holds steady at No. 10, with CR the next highest ranked conference school.

Diablo Valley, meanwhile, is down seven spots to No. 16, wile Laney drops two spots to No. 23, giving the conference five teams in the top 25.

Redwoods will try to go to 2-0 in conference play when Butte travels to the North Coast this weekend.

That game will take place at the Redwood Bowl on Saturday afternoon, with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
