
The Jacks defense continued to perform at a high level over the weekend, posting a pair of shutouts in CCAA women’s soccer.
The Cal Poly Humboldt women hosted Cal State Los Angeles on Friday and Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday and tied both games 0-0.
The Jacks are now 5-3-4 on the season and 3-1-2 in conference play and they sit in a four-way tie for third place in the conference standings.
The team defense has now posted eight shutouts in 12 games this season.
And they’re beginning to attract the attention of their CCAA opponents.
On Tuesday goalkeeper Ari Beddoes was named the FloCollege/CCAA Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for her standout performances in both games.
Beddoes, a junior from San Francisco, played all 180 minutes over the weekend and stopped all 12 shots on target, including six stops against Pomona, which came into the weekend as the No. 5 team in the nation.
The Jacks will hit the road for one game at Cal State San Marcos on Friday before returning home to host San Francisco State on Sunday morning at 11 a.m.
The Humboldt men, meanwhile, continued to struggle in conference play against Los Angeles and Pomona, losing both games.
The Lumberjacks fell 3-0 on Friday and 3-2 on Sunday.
Former Arcata Tiger Ethan Gyenis scored Humboldt’s second goal on Sunday to give his team a 2-1 lead in the 68th minute.
However, it would not last, with the visitors netting twice in the final 11 minutes to pull out the come-from-behind win.
Shota Lam also scored for Humboldt.
With the two losses, the Jacks fell to 2-7-3 on the seaosn and 1-5 in conference play.
The Humboldt men will also play at San Marcos on Friday, which will be their only game of the week.
The College of the Redwoods women, meanwhile, were also in action over the weekend, but saw their three-game unbeaten run come to an end at Butte.
CR lost 6-0 to drop to 1-1 in the Golden Valley Conference and 3-6-1 on the season.
They will return to action against Woodland Community College in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon, before resuming conference play at home against Feather River next Tuesday.
