Del Norte’s Jaylee Keeling isn’t ready to throw in the towel just yet.
On Thursday, the junior standout posted the low score of the day in the fourth round of H-DNL girls golf to keep pressure on league leader Ingrid Monaghan of McKinleyville.
Keeling paced the field with a round of 100 at the Eureka Municipal Golf Course, three strokes better than Monaghan, who finished third.
With the win, Keeling remains just eight strokes behind Monaghan in the season standings, which allow a golfer to drop their lowest round.
Arcata’s Sabrina Macdonald had the second best round of the day with a 102, edging the league leader who had taken top spot in each of the first three rounds of league play.
With three rounds to go in league competition, Monaghan still leads the field with a 292 stroke total, followed by Keeling (300).
And it appears to be a two-horse race for the championship with no other golfer within reach of the frontrunners.
A deep Arcata roster took the team win on Thursday and now holds a seemingly insurmountable 75-stroke lead into race for the team championship.
The Tigers shot a 430 on Thursday, followed by Del Norte (450), McKinleyville (491), Fortuna (523) and Eureka (528).
Del Norte remains second in the season standings.
Three golfers — Arcata’s Quetzal Heacock and Hailey Pepper, and Del Norte’s Taylor Horner — tied for the fourth best score of the day with identical rounds of 109.
Another Arcata Tiger, Shayla Hoffman, placed seventh with a round of 110, with Del Norte’s Kalyssa Moodie (114) in eighth, Arcata’s Sophia Spetzler (121) in ninth and McKinleyville’s Ava Sundberg (123) in 10th.
Alexa McCall had the best score of the day for Fortuna, while Matilda Ulrich led Eureka, with each carding rounds of 125.
The league golfers will return to action at Beau Pre Golf Course in McKinleyville on Wednesday.
