By Ray Hamill — After improving to 4-0 with a big second half against Foothill on Saturday afternoon, the College of the Redwoods football team continues to trend in the right direction in this week’s state rankings.
Head coach Jason White and his players hosted the Owls at the Redwood Bowl and overcame a disappointing second quarter and a 10-point deficit for the second straight week on the way to securing a 24-17 win.
And in the aftermath of the victory, CR makes another noticeable move in the right direction in this week’s JC Athletic Bureau / CCCFCA Coaches Poll, inching towards the top 10.
This week, Redwoods moves up five spots to No. 13.
CR, which has now won seven of its last eight games dating back to last year, will try to maintain its unbeaten start to the campaign when Monterey Peninsula travels to the North Coast this weekend.
That game will be played at the Redwood Bowl and kicks off at 1 p.m., giving local fans another opportunity to check out this year’s team.
The Lobos are 2-2 and sit just outside this week’s top 25.
After breaking into the top 25 at No. 21 two weeks ago, CR moved up three spots to No. 18 last week, before this week’s latest jump.
Things, however, will get more difficult down the stretch of the season as Redwoods begins conference play.
Three of the team’s five National-NorCal Conference opponents are ranked above CR in this week’s rankings, including No. 2 Diablo Valley (4-0), which trails only No. 1 Riverside.
Butte (3-1) is No. 4 in the rankings, while Sierra (3-1) is two spots ahead of CR at No. 11.
A fourth NoCal Conference team, Laney (2-2), is No. 25.
After a bye next week, CR opens conference play on Oct. 10 at American River (0-4).
The local college team will host two of five conference games — against Butte (Oct. 17) and Diablo Valley (Oct. 31) — with additional road games against Sierra (Oct. 24) and Laney (Nov. 7).
