The Humboldt Eagles will carry some momentum into this week’s Northern Humboldt Giants tournament after a dominating team performance on Monday.
The local 17U American Legion team hosted the Wild Cactus at Belotti Field and won 10-0 in five innings.
With the win, the Eagles improved to 3-2 on the season.
And, according to head coach TJ Brogan, they won with a good team performance.
“We won as a team,” Brogan said. “Nothing makes me more proud than winning as a team. Everybody did their job.”
Including pitcher Scotty Brogan.
The Eureka sophomore is one of several talented pitchers on this summer’s Eagles team and he dominated the young Cactus bats.
Brogan gave up just two hits on two walks and stuck out four in a complete-game performance.
And he was efficient, throwing just 70 pitches over the five innings.
“It was another elite performance from our pitching staff,” the Eagles coach said. “And with the bats flying right now, we’re in a good groove.
“As long as we continue to have elite pitching, I don’t think we’re going to have any problems this year.”
Several of the Eagles players also impressed at the plate, including Tyson Marshall, who led the way and finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs.
Leadoff hitter Bryce Pope also made some noise at the plate and was 1-for-2 with two runs, while Kyle Giacone finished 1-for-2 with a run and a walk, and Brayden Bermers finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs.
Another player who is having a big impact with this year’s team is Fortuna High freshman Brice Neuman.
The youngster is coming off an impressive debut campaign at the high school level and was a big bright spot for the Huskies in the Big 5, leading his team in batting average.
He has carried that impressive form into the summer season and finished 1-for-3 with an RBI on Monday.
But his impact is being felt in more ways than that, and he is also playing well at catcher.
“It’s really impressive stuff coming from a freshman,” TJ Brogan said. “The kid’s doing really well.”
Next up, the Eagles will play at the Northern Humboldt Giants tournament, which begins at Arcata High School on Friday.
The Eagles open against Lohse at 5:30 p.m.
