Baseball is not the only sport Mack Town is succeeding at.

This past weekend, a group of 11 McKinleyville youth wrestlers traveled to Fresno for the Freestyle state championships, and remarkably 10 of them placed in their divisions.

The impressive showing included three young standouts who placed in the top three and took home a coveted California Bear trophy.

“They’ve all been working hard since October and putting in a lot of work,” club head coach Virgil Moorehead Jr. said. “And I think this was a result of the work and energy they have put in.”

The club features around 90 young grapplers competing in Folkstyle and Freestyle wrestling combined.

Among the highlights from the trip to Fresno was the performance of young Jeremy Sanders, who had the best performance of the team and placed second in the 12-year-old division.

His teammates Oketoh Moorehead and Cirrus Villarruel each also impressed at the prestigious tournament.

Moorehead placed third place in the 8-year-old division and Villarruel placed third in the 10-year-old bracket.

The young Moorehead and Villarruel enjoyed impressive years on the mats and both also placed second at Folkstyle state championships in March, giving them two coveted Bear trophies this year.

Also impressing this past weekend were 8-year-old Truett Dickey and 10-year-old Bennett Moore, who each placed fourth in their divisions, as well as Evelyn Ramirez, who finished sixth in the 8-year-old division.

Domanik Cosce also impressed with a seventh-place finish in the 12-year-old division, while 10-year-old Zander Franklin, 12-year-old Carter Goodwin and 14-year-old Tanner Baxter all placed eighth in their divisions.

Rounding out the impressive contingent of young wrestlers who made the trip with the team is Josiah Ramirez.
