A pair of H-DNL seniors made the long trip south for the CIF Track and Field State Championships this weekend, and both did a good job representing the league.

Fresh off his two victories at last weekend’s North Coast Section Meet of Champions, Arcata’s Skyler Collenberg qualified for the prestigious state meet in both the shot put and discus.

And he was joined by Del Norte’s Sebastian Espinoza in the shot put, after the Crescent City standout placed second in the event at the NCS MOC.

Both locals continued to impress at the state championships, which were held at Buchanan High School in Clovis near Fresno.

Collenberg, who has enjoyed a record-breaking spring for the Tigers, finished sixth overall in the shot put.

Competing in his final ever high school meet, the Arcata senior finished with a throw of 58’ 1.25”.

Sacred Heart Prep’s Maxime Morelle won with a throw of 60’ 1.75”, with barely two feet separating the top six throwers in a competitive field.

Collenberg’s PR in the event is 61’ 11”, which he threw at the Brookings-Harbor Rotary Invitational in mid April.

Espinoza finished 19th in the shot put with a throw of 50’ 5.5”.

The Del Norte standout’s PR in the event is 55’ 2.5”, which he threw at Dave Allen Twilight meet in early May and is a Warriors school record.

Collenberg also competed in the discus, placing 13th with a throw of 169’ 11”.

Buchanan High’s Karsyn Van Grouw won the state discus title with a throw of 199′, which was 11 feet better than the field.

Collenberg’s PR in the discus is 176’ 4”, which he threw last weekend on the way to victory at the Meet of Champions.

The standout senior holds Arcata High records in both the shot put and discus, as well as the HDN record in the shot put.

CORRECTION: Contrary to a report on Humboldt Sports last week, Collenberg’s winning mark in the discus at the Meet of Champions is not a league record.

The H-DNL record is held by former Eureka Logger Jamin Guilbert, who threw 179’ 10” at the state championships as a senior in 2023.
