
Fortuna junior Addison Burgess and Arcata senior Skyler Collenberg led the H-DNL charge at the weekend North Coast Section Redwood Empire track and field championships.
Burgess set a PR on her way to victory in the girls triple jump, as the best Big 5 athletes traveled to Santa Ross JC on Saturday, while Collenberg continued his dominating season in the throws with first and second-place finishes.
The Arcata standout took the victory in the shot put with a throw of 60’ 6.5” and placed second in the discus with a toss of 160’ 8”.
It was a particularly good day for the H-DNL boys in the throws with six top-10 finishes for league athletes in the two events combined.
Del Norte’s Sebastian Espinoza finished second to Collenberg in the shot put, with Eureka sophomore Jackson Herbert finishing fifth with a PR of 46’ 4” and his teammate Malachi Brown in 10th.
Rounding out a good day for the Loggers in the throws, senior Eddie Gonzalez placed seventh in the discus with a PR of 135’ 1”.
The H-DNL had four other top-three finishes in the boys competition.
Eureka’s Bo Landry placed second in the 110m hurdles, while Del Norte’s Jason Murphy tied for third in the pole vault, Arcata’s Jonah Hessler placed third in the triple jump with a PR of 43’ 4” and the Arcata foursome of Jaxon Lewis, Lorenzo Shaner, A’sa Mason and Eoin McGoldrick placed second in the 4×400 relay.
McGoldrick also placed fifth in the 400m with a PR of 49.82 seconds, as did teammate Finn Boyce in the 300m hurdles, Eureka’s Xavier De La Rosa in the high jump and the Fortuna 4x400m relay team of Kavi Bolden, Mako Limon, Tyren Sanborn and Humberto Florez-Lopez.
Other top-10 finishers for the HDN boys included Landry (sixth) and Del Ls Rosa (seventh) in the triple jump, as well as Bolden in the 200m (seventh) and the 100m (eighth), Del Norte’s Landon Balent in the 200m (eight) and 400m (seventh), Arcata’s Lewis in the 400m (eighth) and Limon in the 300m hurdles (eighth).
Fortuna’s Kavi and Tiki Bolden, Limon and Jack Stacy also placed eighth in the 4x100m relay, two spots ahead of Arcata’s McGoldrick, Shaner, Jack Bertell and Mason.
Arcata’s Micah Cristian, Sebastian Amaro, Caden Demers and Evan Poston also placed seventh in the 4x800m relay, three spots ahead of Eureka’s Tully Elam, Ryder Bullman, Sean Morris and Colin Taylor.
In the boys team competition, Del Norte and Fortuna led the HDN charge and tied for 11th, with Arcata 21st and Eureka 23rd.
Burgess had the highlight performance of the day for the league’s girls teams, taking the victory in the triple jump with a PR of 36’ 1.5”.
Del Norte teammates Melody Brennan and Aurora Mitchell also enjoyed top-three finishes.
Mitchell finished second in the shot put with a PR of 34’ 8” and fifth in the discus with a PR of 106’ 3”, while Brennan placed third in the discus with a throw of 113’ 2”.
As a team, the Arcata girls paced the league teams with a fourth-place finish, followed by Del Norte and Eureka, who tied for 14th, and Fortuna in 24th.
Foruna’s Madison Ruiz had two big finishes, placing fourth in the 400m and fifth in the 200m, while Eureka’s Elizabeth Rominger was fifth in the 400m and seventh in the 200m and her teammate Grecia Ortiz was two spots further back in the 200m, placing ninth.
Arcata’s Anna McLaughlin also impressed, finishing fourth in the long jump, while Del Norte’s Annabelle White placed seventh in both the triple jump and high jump, with her teammate Jeana Erler and Eureka’s Aurora Copeland tying for 10th in the high jump.
Rounding out the top-10 local finishers on the day, Arcata’s Syriah George placed eighth in the shot put with a PR of 31’ 3”, while her teammate Bella DeCarli placed 10th in the 800m and teamed with Zoe Cappuccio, Rose Mondragon and Nehla Espiritu-Blackstone to finish eighth in the 4x800m relay.
