Cal Poly Humboldt athletics has officially named Michael Schroer as the school’s head coach in cross country, removing his interim designation.
Schroer will head up both the men’s and women’s teams and will also serve as an assistant coach with the Jacks track and field program.
“We are excited to continue with Michael Schroer leading our cross country program,” Cal Poly Humboldt Director of Athletics Dr. Nick Pettit said. “His experience, knowledge, community engagement, and passion for helping student-athletes become the best versions of themselves —both in the classroom and in competition —make him the right person to guide our program forward.”
Schroer served as an assistant with the cross country teams alongside head coach Scott Pesch this past fall, playing a key role with the program, including workout design, pacing strategies and race preparation.
He brings a wealth of coaching experience spanning high school, collegiate, and international levels.
Schroer previously served as an assistant coach for Humboldt men’s middle distance runners from March 2014 to June 2015, helping develop athletes who achieved personal bests and competed at the conference championships.
During that same period, he also coached at Arcata High School.
Internationally, Schroer was an assistant track and field and cross country coach at Seoul American High School from 2008 to 2010.
In addition to his coaching success, Schroer boasts an accomplished competitive résumé.
He is a two-time Olympic Trials qualifier, eight-time NCAA Division I All-American, and former high school national champion in the indoor 800 meters.
Competing in masters athletics, he has earned multiple world and national titles, including a 2011 World Championship in the 800 meters (35-39 age group) and several American and world record performances in relay events.
“I’m incredibly honored and excited to be named the head cross country coach at Cal Poly Humboldt,” he said. “This program has a proud tradition, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to build on that legacy while helping our student-athletes grow both competitively and personally.
“I can’t wait to get to work with this team and the Humboldt community.”
