The Wildcats took a break from conference play on Thursday, traveling to Weaverville for a softball doubleheader against Trinity.

And the Ferndale girls came away with a pair of wins, 4-2 and 8-5, to go to 13-7 on the season.

It was a good day for the three Gossi sisters — Madison, Olivia and Abagail — each of whom hit successfully in both games, as well as the bottom of the order which stepped up in a tight game one.

“I felt like as a whole it was one of our better days as a team through both games,” Ferndale head coach Jeremy Griffith said.

Olivia Gossi continued her impressive spring in the circle and pitched a pair of complete games for the two wins.

The junior standout allowed just two earned runs in the opener and struck out 12, while giving up three earned runs in game two and striking out nine.

Just one run separated the two schools heading into the sixth inning of game one, but the visitors would add a late insurance run and held on for the win.

Olivia Gossi led a five-hit team performance at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Abagail Gossi (1-for-2 with an RBI), Madison Gossi (1-for-4 with an RBI) and Fallon Bullan (1-for-4 with a run) each also had a hit in that win.

The Ferndale bats had a better showing in game two.

Influential seniors Tinnley Pidgeon and Madison Gossi each finished 3-for-4, with the latter also driving in three runs and hitting a two-run home run in the seventh to give her team some breathing space in what had been a one-run game.

Another Ferndale senior, Quinn Stokesberry, also had a key clutch hit, hitting a two-out, two-strike, bases-clearing double in the third inning.

Abagail Gossi (1-for-3), Makenzie Chambers (1-for-4) and Olivia Gossi (1-for-4) each also had a base hit in the win.

“The second game was back and forth, and the girls hung in there and battled,” Griffith said.

With the two losses, Trinity dropped to 9-12 on the season.

The Cats, who are the top-ranked Division-6 team in the North Coast Section, will return to conference play on Tuesday, when they close out the Little 4 in a home doubleheader against South Fork, with game one set for 3 p.m.
