After a record-setting performance at last weekend’s Kym Duyst Invitational in Turlock, Cal Poly Humboldt junior Joseph Gonzalez has been selected as the FloCollege/CCAA Men’s Field Athlete of the Week.

The 2023 Eureka High graduate is in his third year with the Jacks and enjoyed a career moment last Saturday.

Gonzalez set a new outdoor school record in the shot put with a throw of 53 feet, 7.75 inches (16.35 meters) and edged Fresno Pacific’s Chavez Grey for first place in the event.

The impressive Gonzalez also threw 16.34m on another of his attempts.

The previous Jacks record in the shot put had stood for 33 years and was set by school Hall of Fame football and track star Rodney Dickerson.

Gonzalez’s record throw is also the top mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association this year.
