Lumberjacks win a thriller in OT, advance to CCAA final

Cal Poly Humboldt Athletics

The Cal Poly Humboldt men’s basketball team will play for a CCAA Tournament championship on Saturday night after a thrilling win on Friday.

The Jacks faced off against Cal State Dominguez Hills in their semifinal and came away with a 76-75 win in overtime.

Humboldt’s Shakir Odunewu finished with 34 points and 12 rebounds to lead the way in a game that was back-and-forth all night and featured 15 lead changes and eight ties.

The two teams were tied 66-66 after four quarters and just one point separated them for much of the extra period.

Freshman Tyriq McNeal scored what would be the winning basket with 30 seconds remaining.

On the ensuing Toros possession, Humboldt’s Brandon Bento-Jackson took a charge to give his team the ball with nine seconds on the clock.

Moments later, Wayne Hampton went to the line for the Jacks but missed both of his free throw attempts to leave the game still in the balance.

But the Toros would miss on a potential game-winning basket as time expired to extend the Jacks’ season.

On Saturday night, the Jacks will play either Cal State East Bay or Cal Poly Pomona for the tournament championship.

Tip off is set for 8 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on local radio on 1340 AM and 107.3 FM.
