Because kindness matters.
A group of Fortuna student-athletes recently surprised a rival school to celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day.
Organized by the Huskies’ Student Athletic Advisory Council (SAAC), seven Fortuna student-athletes made the trip to St. Bernard’s Academy to surprise the Crusaders with chocolate milk and cookies.
“As athletes we know that competition brings out our best effort, determination and passion for the game,” one of the Fortuna athletes told the SB students. “But beyond the scoreboard, what truly defines us is the respect we show for one another, the way we lift each other up, and the sportsmanship that makes our league special.
“That’s why we wanted to take a moment today to recognize and appreciate you, our rivals and fellow athletes.”
After deciding to surprise a league rival school, the Huskies drew the Crusaders’ name out of a hat.
“In the Humboldt-Del Norte League we push each other to be better every time we step onto the court, the field or the track,” another Fortuna student-athlete told the gathering. “But at the end of the day, we are all part of the same sports community, and that means supporting one another — both in competition and kindness.
“Because no matter what colors we wear, we are all part of something bigger: a community that values character, heart and sportsmanship.”
Random Acts of Kindness Day has been celebrated annually since 1995, when it was founded in Denver by The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation.
“We hope this small gesture brings a smile to your faces, just as the games we share bring excitement and energy to our schools,” another Husky told the gathering. “Whether we’re facing off on the court or cheering from the sidelines, we want you to know that we admire the dedication and commitment you bring to your school and your team.”
