NCS PLAYOFFS — Arcata girls, St. Bernard’s, Eureka boys advance

By Ray Hamill — Seven H-DNL teams tipped off the North Coast Section basketball playoffs on Tuesday night, with three of them advancing to the second round.

In boys Division-5 action, the Loggers won an all-local showdown at Eureka High, getting the better of Hoopa 72-51, while Arcata hosted Berean Christian and lost 57-51.

The Loggers, who are seeded No. 2 in the bracket, will now host No. 7 Gateway in Friday night’s quarterfinals, with tip off set for 7 p.m.

In boys Division-3 action, Little 4 champs St. Bernard’s rallied from an early 14-point deficit to beat Miramonte in overtime, 73-72.

The win sets up a doubleheader of playoff action at St. Bernard’s on Friday night, with the school’s boys and girls teams taking the court.

The SB boys, who are seeded No. 3, will host No. 6 College Park in their quarterfinal, while the St. Bernard’s girls will open their playoff campaign on the same night at 5:30.

The Crusaders are seeded No. 1 in the girls Division-3 bracket and had an opening-round bye on Tuesday.

They will now play their quarterfinal against No. 8 Liberty, which got the better of San Leandro in the opening round.

In girls action on Tuesday, two H-DNL teams were involved in the Division-1 bracket.

The No. 3 Arcata girls hosted No. 14 Campolindo and won 48-37, while No. 12 Eureka traveled to the Bay Area to play No. 5 Alameda and lost a close game, 57-56.

The Tigers will now play No. 11 Pinole Valley in their quarterfinal on Friday night after the Spartans upset the odds at No. 6 California, 54-45.

In the Division-3 girls bracket, No. 10 Del Norte traveled to play No. 7 Jesse M. Bethel and lost 49-41.

After Tuesday’s results, nine H-DNL teams remain alive, including four schools scheduled to open on Wednesday night.

In boys action, McKinleyville will host El Cerrito in Division 2, Del Norte will host Head-Royce in Division 4 and Ferndale will host Rio Lindo Adventist in Division 6.

In the girls Division-2 bracket, No. 15 Fortuna will play at No. Moreau Catholic.

All of Wednesday’s games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

The Ferndale girls are also still in contention.

The Wildcats are seeded No. 2 in Division 6 and have an opening-round bye on Wednesday before playing either Mendocino or San Francisco Waldorf on Saturday.
