College of the Redwoods baseball will begin conference play later this week with a three-game series at Lassen on Friday and Saturday.
Redwoods is 2-11 heading in the Golden Valley Conference opener, after dropping three of four games at Los Medanos late last week. Redwoods had a scheduled doubleheader at Napa Valley postponed on Tuesday because of the weather.
Those games will now take place next Tuesday instead.
On Thursday of last week, the CR men opened a four-gamer series at Los Medanos with a doubleheader split, losing game one 19-8, before bouncing back to take game two 5-1.
Redwoods dropped both ends of a doubleheader the following day, losing 12-6 and 6-5.
Head coach John Downey is hoping to see more consistency from his players as they get set for conference play.
“As a team we have to continue to work on executing defensively in situations where we need it,” Downey said. “We are a team that will get a lot of routine outs defensively, and if we don’t do the simple things it will continue to lead to unfortunate results.”
“I am proud of the effort they showed this weekend, but with GVC play up (this week) we have to be consistent if we want to achieve our goals.”
There were some bright spots at Los Medanos, most notably the play of Evan Fraser and Kamole Gilliland.
Fraser pitched a complete game for the win game two, giving up just three hits and two walks in seven innings and striking out three.
Gilliland had the hot bat for the series, finishing with multiple hits in three of the four games.
He finished 2-for-4 in each of the first two games, while driving in a pair of runs in Thursday’s win, and then went 4-for-5 with an RBI in Friday’s opener.
“Really saw some good things this weekend, especially from Gilliland and Fraser,” Downey said, “Those two had fantastic weekends individually. Can’t say enough good things about them.”
Xavier La Pena (2-for-5, RBI), Tristen Valenzuela (2-for-2, walk), and Hunter Stockinger (2-for-3) each also had multiple hits in the series opener, while teammate Tyson Bragg finished 1-for-3 with a pair of walks.
Javier Mesa (2-for-4) added two hits in Thursday’s win, while Stockinger (2-for-3, two runs) and David MacDonald (2-for-4) led the team at the plate in Friday’s opener, along with Gilliland.
The Redwoods bats were held to just two hits in Friday’s second game.
CR will play two games against Lassen on Friday, with game one set for 11 a.m., followed by a single game on Saturday at 11 a.m.
