The Del Norte Warriors’ dominance on the local wrestling mats continued over the weekend.
Head coach Clinton Schaad and his wrestlers traveled to Lumberjack Arena to compete in the H-DNL Championships on Saturday and secured an incredible eighth straight boys league title.
And once again, it wasn’t even close.
A total of 12 Warriors placed in the top four in the 14 weight classes, including six champions and three who finished second.
“I thought we did really good,” Schaad said. “It’s always nice to go down and win a league title. We never take that for granted, and I thought the team wrestled really well overall, boys and girls.”
Four of the six Del Norte individual champions — Remington Escobedo (150 pounds), Wyatt Lewis (157), Davion Johnson (190) and Robert Reyes-Villegas (215) — pinned their way through the tournament, with Lewis named tournament Most Outstanding Upper Weight Wrestler.
“He did great,” Schaad said of Lewis. “He had a great day. Wyatt’s got really big credentials. He’s been doing well all year.”
So too has Fortuna’s Tyson Evanow, who was named the tournament Most Outstanding Lower Weight Wrestler after winning the title at 144.
Other Warriors who took home individual titles included freshman David Burshem at 113 and Thunder Lewis at 126.
Three of their teammates placed second in their weight divisions, including Lucas Lopez (106), Chulhs Bates (120) and Wyatt Sharp (132), while Jacob Burger placed third at 165.
As a team, Del Norte scored 209.5 points, which was 70 points better than second-placed Arcata (139.5).
