By Ray Hamill — The Arcata girls keep winning and they keep moving up in the North Coast Section rankings.
For the third straight week, the Tigers have made a move in the right direction, breaking into the top-10 this week at No. 10.
They also remain No. 1 in the Humboldt Sports Power Rankings for the fifth straight week and are No. 3 in NCS Division 3.
For good measure, the Tigers, who have won eight straight games, are also ranked No. 5 among D-3 schools in all of California.
Three other H-DNL teams are ranked in the top 30 in the NCS and seven of the nine league programs feature in the top 54 out of 153 teams in the section.
St. Bernard’s is No. 23, followed by No. 26 Eureka, No. 29 Fortuna, No. 45 Ferndale and No. 49 Del Norte.
McKinleyville remains just outside the top 50 at No. 54.
After clinching at least a co-championship in the Little 4 with a two-point win at Ferndale on Thursday, the St. Bernard’s girls hold steady at No. 2 in our Power Rankings for the fifth straight week, but this week they’re joined by the Loggers.
There appears to be little to separate these two schools right now and don’t be surprised to see another overtime battle between them in the Niclai semifinals at College of the Redwoods in two weeks.
The Loggers got the better of Del Norte in Big 5 action this week, but it took another overtime to barely get past them.
A young Warriors team is showing steady progress under the guidance of first-year head coach Nick Perez and this is a team that is quickly maturing.
The Warriors, who are No, 4 in our Power Rankings this week, have followed every loss with a win dating back to Christmas and are battling Fortuna for the third and final Big 5 Dick Niclai tournament spot, with the two schools set to face off in Crescent City on the final night of conference play next Thursday.

The Huskies, meanwhile, are No. 5 in our Power Rankings.
They ended a three-game conference losing streak with a nice win over McKinleyville this week to get their Niclai hopes back on track.
A win against Eureka on Tuesday would see them move into a tie with Del Norte in the Big 5 heading into Thursday’s big showdown in Crescent City.
Even if they lose to Eureka, they will go into Thursday’s big showdown with a chance to tie the Warriors for third.
Seven of the H-DNL teams are also ranked in the top 10 in their NCS divisions, including five in the top six.
In addition to Arcata, St. Bernard’s is ranked No. 1 in Division 5 and No. 4 among D-5 teams in all of California, while Ferndale is No. 2 in Division 6 in the NCS and also No. 4 in the state.
Eureka, meanwhile, is No. 6 in NCS Division 3, as is Hoopa in Division 5, while Fortuna is No. 8 in Division 4.
Del Norte also is No. 10 in NCS Division 3.
