COLLEGE ROUNDUP — CR women finish strong to beat Shasta

File photo – The Redwoods women continued to roll with their fourth straight win on Saturday.

The College of the Redwoods women’s basketball team made it four straight wins with a 50-37 victory over Shasta on Saturday afternoon to set up a huge showdown at Butte on Thursday.

The win lifts Redwoods to 5-1 in the Golden Valley Conference and keeps the pressure on the conference leading Roadrunners, who came into a Saturday showdown at Feather River unbeaten in conference play at 5-0.

Also in action on Saturday, the CR men defeated Shasta 90-75 to go to 5-1 in the GVC and remain on the heels of conference leaders Feather River (6-0) with four games remaining each, including a big showdown between the two frontrunners at CR on Feb. 11.

Both Cal Poly Humboldt teams also played on Saturday.

The Humboldt men followed a 77-66 win at Cal State Los Angeles on Thursday with a 78-77 loss at Dominguez Hills.

The victory sees the Toros break a tie with the Jacks for second in the standings, as they improved to 11-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and Humboldt dropped to 10-4.

The Humboldt women lost for the second time in three days, following a 74-47 loss at Los Angeles with a 51-49 defeat at Dominguez Hills.

The Jacks are now fourth in the conference standings with a record of 10-4, one win behind both Chico State and Los Angeles, who are both 11-3.

The CR women, however, continued to roll and completed the conference sweep of the Knights with their 13-point victory.

And they secured the win with a big finish.

They trailed by three at halftime, but the home team would outscore the visitors 21-9 in the fourth quarter to break open a tight game and secure the win.

“We were able to finally get into a rhythm and play our style in the second half, which helped propel us over Shasta to win the game,” CR head coach Bree Northern said.

Mayleah Jackson led a balanced team performance with 11 points in the win, while teammate Itzel Torres added 10 points.

Former South Fork Cub Caidence Young also impressed in the win, hitting a pair of big 3-pointers to give her teammates a much-needed spark when they were struggling to find their rhythm early in the game.

“We got off to a rough start,” Northern said. “We struggled making shots and had low energy. Caidence did a great job coming in off the bench and she hit two 3s back-to-back for us to give us some momentum.”

Paityn Erlenbush added eight points in the win, as the Redwoods women improved to 13-9 overall.

“I thought we did a pretty good job defending Shasta,” Northern said. “However, we did foul a bit too much and sent them to the line for quite a few shots.

“Shasta did a great job defending us and keeping us from getting into a rhythm.”

Shasta dropped to 2-4 in the GVC and 8-14 overall.
