The Eureka Loggers moved into a two-way tie atop the Big 5 standings with a dominating 52-24 win at Del Norte on Wednesday night.
The trip north didn’t seem to bother the Eureka girls, who started fast and never relented, outscoring the home team in all four quarters and improving to 2-0 in conference play.
They are tied with Arcata for the Big 5 lead, with the two schools set to play each other next Wednesday night in what will be a key game for both.
Madelyn Fazio had a huge night in Wednesday’s win, scoring a game-high 19 points and shooting lights out from downtown.
The senior standout had five 3-pointers.
Junior Tiarah Maualuga also had a big all-around game in the win, finishing with 11 rebounds, eight points and five assists.
The combination of Maualuga and Fazio helped set the tone all night and the Warriors had no answer.
“We’ve got a really solid inside/outside game, and it’s a joy to watch,” Eureka head coach Cliff Napoleon said.
Impressive sophomore Jaylee Keeling led the Del Norte girls in scoring with six points, but as a team they did not shoot the ball well despite battling all night.
“We played hard but couldn’t make a shot tonight,” Del Norte head coach Nick Perez said. “Eureka shot the ball very well.”
The Loggers came out fired up and led 19-4 after the opening quarter, making several early contested shots with Fazio and Maualuga leading the way.
“Del Norte was up on us as soon as we crossed half court,” Napoleon said. “Nick had his girls playing hard the entire game. They’re young and will only get better.”
Maualuga made good decisions in possession.
“Tiarah really played a great game,” Napoleon added. “One of the reasons why we got shots was because they were doubling down on her. She made the quick read and got the ball out to the shooters.”

Her teammates took full advantage, including the always dangerous Nashya Williams, who continued her impressive winter and finished the game with 13 points, eight rebounds and four steals.
Kansas Coulson and Austynn Franz each added five points for the Warriors, who dropped to 1-2 in the Big 5, while teammate Avery Ritter added four points.
The Loggers are now 13-4 overall, while the Warriors are 8-7.
Next up, on Friday night the Eureka girls will host Fortuna.
The Warriors have a bye in conference play on Friday before playing at Fortuna next Wednesday.
