Both Fortuna varsity wrestling teams enjoyed impressive performances at Eureka’s North Coast Classic tournament on Friday and Saturday.
The Fortuna girls took home the team championship on Friday night and were led by Natasha Lanza, who place first in her weight class.
The boys, meanwhile, took fourth place out of 18 teams the following day and were led by Tyson Evanow, who placed first at 144 pounds and was named a Tournament Outstanding Wrestler.
The boys tournament was won by Arcata with 181.5 points, followed by Foothill (177), Eureka (159.5) and Fortuna (126).
Other local boys teams competing included McKinleyville, which placed seventh with 104 points, as well as a shorthanded Del Norte team, which was ninth.
The Hoopa boys finished 11th, St. Bernard’s was 12th, Ferndale 14th and South Fork 17th.
The Fortuna girls showcased their team depth with six of their wrestlers placing in the top four in their weight divisions.
In addition to Lanza’s impressive performance, Camila Meija and Tiffany Krause each placed second, while Bella Mora and Allison Watson both finished third and Myla Kirk finished fourth.
The Huskies won the tournament with 110 points, 10 more than second-placed Windsor.
Other H-DNL schools competing in the tournament included Del Norte in fourth, Eureka in 11th, Arcata in 12th and Hoopa in 14th.
The Fortuna boys had six wrestlers place in the top five in their brackets, including two individual champions.
In addition to Evanow’s big performance at 144, teammate Jack Chipman also won his bracket at 165 pounds.
Fortuna’s Brett Coleman also impressed and scored some valuable team points with a second-place finish at 138, while both Thoren Weeks and Jaylon Bean placed fourth at 126 and 106, respectively.
Rounding out a big day for the Huskies in tournament action, Mattaniah Dare finished fifth at 120 pounds.



















No mention of Mckinleyville wrestler Thurman Henderson who won all 3 of his matches by pin in the 1st round.
