Jacks win historic championship, advance to NCAA playoffs

Cal Poly Humboldt Athletics – The CPH players celebrate their big semifinal win over Cal Poly Pomona on Friday.

An historic season continued for the Cal Poly Humboldt women’s soccer team this past weekend.

On Friday, the Jacks advanced to the California Collegiate Athletic Association championship game for the first time in program history with a 1-0 win over top-seeded Cal Poly Pomona, and on Sunday they completed a memorable run in conference play with a 1-0 win over No. 2 seed Chico State in the final.

The victory secures the conference’s automatic berth in the upcoming NCAA Division-II playoffs for the Jacks, who were seeded No. 5 for the CCAA tournament.

The CPH defense has been playing at very high level this year and that continued against some of the best offenses in the West Region in tournament play as the Jacks shut out all three of their opponents.

Remarkably, the Humboldt women posted 10 shutouts in 14 conference games this fall, including the postseason.

Alexis Blue netted the only goal of the game in the 75th minute, with Heidie Munoz assisting on the sore.

With the win, the Jacks improved to 8-5-8 on the season, while Chico dropped to 10-6-4.

The win also stretched the team’s unbeaten run to six straight games.

The Jacks will now advance to the NCAA tournament.

After receiving the No. 7 seed in the West Region on Monday, they will open at No. 2 Cal Poly Pomona on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.

The two schools have played twice this year.

In addition to last week’s tournament semifinal, they tied 2-2 in Pomona in a regular-season matchup last month.

The CCAA also announced the all-conference selections last week.

Freshman midfielder Karsyn Ross was included on the all-conference second team for the Jacks, while senior goalkeeper Carson Thomson-Terrel, freshman defender Kyla Okamoto and Munoz, a sophomore forward, all received an honorable mention.
