NCS SOCCER — More excitement, close games for local teams

File photo – The Arcata players and coaches celebrate their recent H-DNL champinshiupo. The Tigers have now won back-to-back playoff games.

A run of exciting and close games continued on Friday afternoon

for the local contingent of teams in this year’s North Coast Section soccer playoffs.

Two H-DNL boys teams traveled to the Bay Area for their tournament quarterfinals and both were involved in one-goal games.

In Division-1 action, No. 6 seed Arcata played at No. 3 College Prep in Berkeley and won 1-0.

In Division 3, the South Fork Cubs traveled to Danville and lost 2-1 to top-seeded Quarry Lane.

All six playoff games involving H-DNL boys teams this week were decided by the narrowest of margins.

With Friday’s win, the Tigers advanced to next week’s semifinal against either No. 2 Fortuna or No. 10 Drew, who face off in their quarterfinal under the lights at Husky Field on Saturday night.

If the Drew boys upset the odds, the Tigers will host the semifinal, whereas if the Huskies win then they would host their league rival in the semifinal.

After dropping two of their first four games of the season, the Arcata boys are now unbeaten in 17 straight games.

“We were able to manage the game nicely through possession and organized defense,” Arcata head coach John Davidson said after Friday’s win. “Beyond proud to be part of this team and to travel down here and have a strong performance.”

Sophomore Dakota Grosveld netted the only goal of the game, with freshman teammate Isai Aguilar assisting on the score.

The victory means the Tigers are now just two wins from securing a first-ever NCS soccer championship for the school, boys or girls.

The Cubs, meanwhile, saw their season end with another close game.

Two days after opening their postseason with a 4-3 win at Contra Costa Christian, the No. 9 seeds pushed the top-seeded Quarry Lane boys all the way in another one-goal showdown.

The NCS playoffs continue for the local teams on Saturday.

In addition to Fortuna’s big showdown at Husky Field, four H-DNL girls teams will be in action in the Division-1 bracket on Saturday afternoon.

Top seed Ferndale hosts No. 4 St. Bernard’s and No. 6 Del Norte hosts No. 7 Eureka.

Both of those games are set for 2 p.m.
