The H-DNL champion Arcata Tigers are moving on in the North Coast Section boys soccer playoffs.
And so too are the South Fork Cubs.
The Tigers, who are seeded No. 6 in the Division-1 tournament, scored a pair of first-half goals and held on for a 2-1 win over No. 11 Cristo Rey De La Salle out of Oakland at McKinleyville High School in the afternoon.
The game was played at Mack instead of Arcata because the recently installed Arcata field was once again unplayable.
Also in action on Wednesday, South Fork won 4-3 at Contra Costa Christian in Division 3, McKinleyville lost 5-4 at Credo in Division 2, and Del Norte fell 2-1 at International in Division 1.
The wet conditions at McKinleyville High School affected the play of both teams, making running and passing more of a challenge.
Cruz Aguilar was involved in both of Arcata’s goals, assisting on the opening strike and doubling his team’s lead on a free kick later in the opening half.
Lars Gerdes scored the opener.
The team’s three captains — Aguilar, Gerdes and defender Jonah Morgan — all played well and kept their teammates focused throughout.
The win sets up a quarterfinal showdown at No. 3 College Prep in Oakland on Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
“I don’t think we were as sharp as we could have been defending the corner kick they scored on,” Arcata head coach John Davidson said. “But we got the result and we’re very happy to go down to College Prep and see what we can do there.”
The South Fork Cubs, meanwhile, won their Division-3 playoff opener at Contra Costa Christian in Walnut Creek.
The No. 8 seeded visitors edged the No. 9 seeded hosts 4-3.
That win sets up a quarterfinal showdown at No. 1 Quarry Lane High in Danville on Friday afternoon at 2:30.
The top seeds in the bracket had an opening-round bye.
The Fortuna Huskies, who are seeded No. 2 in Division 1, also had an opening round bye on Wednesday and will host No. 10 Drew at Husky Field on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
If both Arcata and Fortuna win their quarterfinals, they would then meet in next week’s semifinals.
Interestingly, all four HDN teams in action on Wednesday were involved in one-score games.
