SOCCER ROUNDUP — Tigers remain on track on busy day of action

It was another busy Saturday for the H-DNL soccer teams, with seven games played.

In addition to the Ferndale girls’ Little 4 conference-clinching 5-0 win at South Fork, the St. Bernard’s and Del Norte girls tied 0-0 in Crescent City.

In Big 4 action, the Arcata girls remain atop the conference standings after a 3-0 win over McKinleyville, while Fortuna defeated Eureka 2-0.

The Arcata boys also remain atop the league standings after a 4-0 win at Eureka, while Fortuna kept the pressure on the leaders with a 6-3 win over McKinleyville and South Fork got the better of St. Bernard’s 4-2.

With two games remaining, the Tigers (9-0-1) now have 19 points, followed by Fortuna (8-1-1) with 17 points, while Del Norte (6-1-2) remains third with 14 points and a game in hand.

Arcata’s final two games are at home against Del Norte on Wednesday and at Fortuna a week later.

“The results of the team’s hard work were tangible,” Arcata boys head coach John Davidson said after his team’s win. “We are looking forward towards hosting Del Norte on Wednesday and to honor our seniors that evening.”

Kaden Lodes netted a hat trick for Fortuna, as the Huskies rallied from an early deficit to get the better of the Panthers and keep their hopes of back-to-back league titles on track.

The Fortuna boys trailed early, but carried a 2-1 lead into halftime, before stretching the advantage to five after the interval.

“We went down early and made some adjustments,” Fortuna head coach Daniel Holmes said. “Kaden Lodes had a hat trick and really put us on his back.

“McKinleyville played with a lot of heart and determination.”

The Arcata girls also took care of business with their fourth straight conference win.

However, the Panthers battled neck and neck with them in the first half before running out of steam in the second half.

“We played well, but our lack of subs kind of hurt us,” said McKinleyville head coach Adam Canepa, whose team finished the game with just 12 players after influential sophomore Abi Pimentel was forced from the game because of injury. “In the first half, it was kind of up and down the field and for the most part fairly even.

“And in the second half, they were rotating people in and it paid off.”

Sophomore Amara Som had a big game for the Panthers as she continues to establish herself in the team, as did the ever-reliable Emily Mather and Grace Pimentel.

Freshman McKenna McConnell also impressed for Mack with one of her best games.

The St. Bernard’s girls, meanwhile, traveled to Crescent City and battled to a 0-0 tie.

“I’m proud o the way our group battled and kept their composure under pressure,” SB head coach Jeff Sellars said. “Our forwards worked to create chances and stretch the defense. They were dangerous all night.

Defensively, Carli Baum, Paula Bullock, Xochitl Granado and Macie Wantt “were outstanding,” according to the coach, while Kaitlynn Amis had another strong showing in goal and got the clean sheet.

“We had our opportunities to put the game away but just couldn’t find the finishing touch,” the coach added. “Still, it was a great team effort and we’ll take the positives into our next match.”

Both goalkeepers did a good job to keep their teams in the game.

“It was back and forth,” Del Norte head coach Shawn Eckart said. “They came out strong in the first half for sure and we had a discussion at halftime and regrouped.”

Aurora Mitchell and Hollyn Wakefield worked well together in midfield for the home team, while the defense of Teexeeshe Scott, Deanna Montanez, Alex Eckart and Calia Deater helped secure the shutout along with goalkeeper Avery Ritter.

“I thought St. Bernard’s was great,” Eckart added. “It was an amicable game. It was just a hard fought match.”

Elisabeth Lopez also impressed for the Warriors.

“She was box to box all game,” Shawn Eckart said.
