Halfway through the H-DNL schedule in boys soccer, the Arcata Tigers are alone atop the league standings.

On Saturday afternoon, the Arcata boys netted two second half goals to break a 1-1 tie in a top-of-the-table clash against Fortuna at Arcata High and they held on for a huge 3-1 victory.

The win sees the Tigers leapfrog the defending champs in the standings with a record of 5-0-1 (11 points), while the loss was the first of the year for the Huskies, who dropped to 5-1-0 (10 points).

Lars Gerdes netted twice for the home team, while Cruz Aguilar also scored.

Sophomore Dakota Grosveld assisted on one of the goals.

“We had a good first half but didn’t find our rhythm in the second half,” Fortuna head coach Daniel Holmes said. “Arcata played well and deserved the win.”

Kaden Lodes scored the only goal of the game for Fortuna, which is now 14-1 on the season.

However, there is still a long way to go in the race for this year’s championship, with six games remaining for all seven teams.

Del Norte, which had a forfeit win over South Fork this weekend, is also in the mix and sits just one point back of Fortuna with a record of 4-1-1.

The Del Norte boys tied Arcata last weekend.

“We will go back to the drawing board on Monday and make adjustments for the second half of the season,” Holmes added .

League play continues on Wednesday.
