BIG 4 SOCCER — Ties the story of the day in conference play

After a weekend of playing the Little 4 schools, the Big 4 teams resumed conference play on Tuesday.

And both games ended in ties.

Eureka traveled to McKinleyville and scored a late equalizer to share the spoils 2-2, while Fortuna and Arcata also tied 3-3.

With the results, Eureka and Fortuna remain tied atop the early standings with three points apiece, while both McKinleyville and Arcata both now have one point.

Madison Miller had a big day for the Huskies and netted all three of her team’s goals, including a late equalizer to salvage a share of the spoils.

“She saved our butts today,” Fortuna head coach Arnulfo Aguirre said.

Amy Aubuchon also had a big say in the result and assisted on two of Miller’s goals, as did did Isabel Sanchez, who assisted on the other.

Arcata enjoyed the better of exchanges early on and opened the scoring just five minutes in, before the Huskies came storming back with a pair of quick goals midway through the period.

But the Tigers would strike again before halftime, netting twice in the closing stages of a high-scoring first half to carry a slender advantage into the break.

“Not our best game, but it’s still early in the season,” said Aguirre, who added that he hopes the game will be a learning experience for his players.

No stats or details were immediately available for Arcata.

At McKinleyville, meanwhile, the Panthers turned in a much better performance than in last week’s conference-opening loss to Fortuna.

“All in all, I’m very pleased with the result, and I thought it was a fairly even match,” McKinleyville head coach Adam Canepa said.

McKenna McConnell opened the scoring for the home team, with Amaya Teraoka assisting on the goal, and the teams were deadlocked 1-1 at the break.

Abi Pimentel would give the Panthers the lead in the second half on a penalty kick (see video highlights above), but the Loggers would battle back to tie things up off a corner kick with about 20 minutes remaining.

According to Canepa, the entire Mack defense played well and was pivotal in securing the tie, with the impressive Amara Som anchoring the unit.

Teraoka and Emily Mathers also were hugely influential for the Panthers, playing multiple positions and playing them all effectively.

“It shows a lot of promise for our team,” Canepa said.

No scoring details were available for the Loggers.
