Loggers top Fort Bragg to begin busy weekend for local teams

The Eureka volleyball team defeated Fort Bragg in three sets on Friday night to kickstart a busy weekend for the team and some of their league rivals.

The Loggers won 25-13, 25-13, 25-16.

Eureka captain Tiara Maualuga led the way and finished with 14 kills and four aces, while teammate Alena Battle also impressed and added 11 kills, four aces and a block.

The victory will give the Eureka girls some momentum heading into a busy Saturday at the Arcata tournament, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

In addition to the Loggers and the host school, the 16-team tournament will also feature Hoopa, McKinleyville and Fortuna, as well as several out-of-area schools.

The tournament will take place at both Arcata and McKinleyville high schools, with the action getting under way at 8:30 a.m.

Eureka head coach Stephanie Napoleon was happy with her team’s overall performance on Friday night, as the Loggers continue to build towards conference play, which begins next week.

“It was a team effort,” Napoleon said. “Everyone played and contributed.”

Macy Secor added six kills in the win, while Ramona Dusel had five kills and 10 assists.

Violla Kingsang also impressed with 13 assists, and Eddy Hale led the defense with 13 digs.

Savanhie Phanhsavang helped set the tone early in the game from the service line, serving 13 of the 25 points in the opening set.

However, it was not a mistake-free performance by the home team.

“We had a lot of unforced errors tonight, so I am happy we were still able to pull together as a team and get the win in three sets,” Napoleon said.

“I am really enjoying this team. They are fun to coach.”
