By Ray Hamill — As we get set for week three of the local high school football season, one team will finally get to play its first game of the campaign.

After watching all of their HDN rivals play over the last two weeks, the South Fork Cubs will kick off on Friday night.

The Cubs will welcome Happy Camp to Miranda, with game time set for 5 p.m.

Happy Camp is 1-1 and is coming off a 40-0 loss at Chester.

Fortuna, Del Norte Arcata, Ferndale, Hoopa and St. Bernard’s will all also be in action this weekend, while McKinleyville and Eureka each have a bye.

There is just one other game featuring local teams on Friday night, with the Del Norte Warriors traveling to McKinleyville High School to play the Arcata Tigers.

The Warriors are off to 2-0 start, having defeated Ashland 42-13 last week, and are in the midst of four straight road games.

The Tigers, meanwhile, are coming off a bye and are 0-1 after losing to Eureka in their season opener two weeks ago.

Friday night’s showdown is set for 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live on KPOD 97.9 FM, as well as through DelNorteSports.com.

Saturday will be a busy day for local teams, with four H-DNL schools in action.

There will be two afternoon varsity games, with Hoopa traveling to St. Bernard’s and Ferndale hosting Fall River in the Cats’ home opener.

St. Bernard’s has impressed early in the new campaign and is 2-0 after dominating at McKinleyville last week.

Hoopa is also coming off a win, getting the better of Etna 20-6 on Friday night and improving to 1-1.

The Wildcats also won over the weekend, rolling over Fort Bragg 57-0 in their season opener.

Fall River is 2-0, but both of its games have been close, including a 24-21 win at Portola this past weekend.

And rounding out a busy couple of days for the local teams, the Fortuna Huskies will look for their first win of the season when they travel to play Ukiah on Saturday night.

Fortuna, which had a bye this past weekend, is 0-1 after dropping its opener on the road at St. Helena two weeks ago.

The Wildcats are 1-1 after a 55-28 win at Carlmont over the weekend.

Saturday night’s game is set for 7 p.m.

McKinleyville (1-1) and Eureka (1-1) both have byes this week.

Next week, the Panthers play at University Prep and Eureka plays at Novao.
